I run about 1200 miles a year. After I read Born to Run several years ago, which I followed up with Barefoot Running, I ditched my traditional heavily cushioned thick heel running shoes and started using minimalist running shoes, which have little cushioning and a very modest heel. The reason is that they are designed for runners who are going to land on the balls of their feet rather than their heels. My running never felt so good after I started doing this.I had been using the Nike Free Run 3 5.0 (i.e 5mm of heel lift rather than being totally flat), which is an excellent running shoe, but I wanted to try something different that was a little "flatter." I have some slight pronation, so I take that into account. After trying on lots of different running shoes at my local running store, I bought the Newton Gravity and am very happy with my purchase. Here is why:1. The front sole is "weighted" with lugs that naturally make your feet tend to land on the balls of your feet when you run. I noticed a difference immediately when I tried these on the treadmill in the running store. However, some people may not like the feel of these lugs when you walk, though I barely notice them.Note: If you have never used minimalist running shoes before, these running shoes will take some getting used to. The Newton site has some great tips.2. These are a little "flatter" that the Nike--3mm versus 5mm (that difference may not seem like a lot, but believe me I can tell the difference), and so have a little more of the "barefoot experience." Since I pronate a little when I run, and also since I like to run on trails (nothing muddy or too rocky), the running store recommended the Gravity over the Motion because the Gravity's heel is a little more reinforced.3. There is lots of room in the toe, and unlike some other minimalist running shoes, these do not have the snug socklike fit, which means that they will still be comfortable when my feet expand while running in hot humid weather, and also accommodate some of the thicker socks I wear in the dead of winter when running outdoors.4. I bought one size larger than my street shoe size because like lots of minimalist running shoes they run a little small.Bottom line: These are extremely comfortable for me to run in and make it easier to land on the balls of my feet.Shop for price.
