UPDATED REVIEW AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE!FINAL UPDATE BELOW - THE GOOD AND THE NEEDS IMPROVEMENT!!I love to run distances of 16 km (10 miles) or more at least 4 times per week and my running style is minimalist.I sweat heavily and since I live in Texas, my shoes need to handle lots of moistureHistory: Ran in Asics from the time I was 10 to age 40. I could not get past 7 or 8 miles without my IT Band flaring up. I did a ton of research on different running styles and decided to give the barefoot method a try.First Shoe - Newton's ... I was able to increase my distance to 10 miles or more; however, they were a bit heavy and the raised sole in the front would sometimes cause ankle issues for me. The worst part was that they are expensive and do not last very long - about 300 - 350 miles.Next Shoe - Wave Universe 3 ... I fell in love and was able to get my distance to 20 miles or more. Even with the minimal shoe, my average mileage - 2 pairs was about 600 miles.Next Shoe - Wave Universe 4 ... same as above - just different colors - same great fit and feel. My distances over 4 pairs has averaged 520 - 650 miles each.Next Shoe - I drank the kool-aid and tried Vibram Bikala's and Altra Zero Drops. The Altras were very light; however, had pressure points that hurt my feet. The Vibram's ... Ugh! With my high arch, it caused my toes to spread out. I stepped on a rock and fractured the second metatarsal on my right foot. NEVER AGAIN.Final Shoe - Wave Universe 5's. I will admit that I was a bit concerned as the uppers are almost spider silk thin and the weight - wow!! I only have 28 miles on this pair, but the first run at 15 miles felt great and my last run at 13 miles was just as good.The uppers are much stronger than they look and the sole is a bit stronger than the 4's. At this point, Mizuno dramatically improved a shoe that I thought was already fantastic. I will update my review once I am ready to replace them.BillHUPDATED REVIEW!MY REVIEW OF THE WAVE UNIVERSE 5's - Part IIWeight? Put Running Socks in one hand and the shoes in the other... Can you tell the difference? I cannot.Upper: Very thin and lightweight mesh - I can only compare it to spider silk and so far, it is just as strong and very breathable.Lower: A thinner, slightly spongier version of the sole on the 4's. With 245 miles in, they are holding up pretty well.Fit: Like the 3's and 4's, they fit a glove. These shoes almost feel like a sock which makes them even more comfortable.Durability: My original concern was the strength of the upper; however, my only concern now is the sole. These have held up well over the first 31 days and 245 miles and I am hoping to get over 500 miles out of these like I did the 3's and 4's.Look: Some people don't care for it; however, I've had 20 to 1 compliments to complaints ratio.Smell: After about 2 weeks of intense running in very warm and humid conditions, the shoes will become ripe. Why: As breathable as they are, they do absorb a bit of odor.Washability: YES!!! I wash mine about every two weeks along with my running belt. I wash them in a regular cycle and dry them in the dryer. I do place them in a mesh garment bag to keep the laces from getting wound around other items.ISSUES:* Primary Issue: The tongue can slip down making it a bit uncomfortable. Temp Solution: I used a very small zip tie and strapped it to the laces* Minor Request: It would be nice to get velcro sides to and bypass lacesDo I recommend: STRONGLY!OCTOBER 18, 2013 - 395 Miles Completed!Longest Run - 31 milesAverage Run - 16 milesTotal Miles - 395THE GREATUppers:* Durable for normal distance running - not sure about how they would hold up with lots of turns* Very Breathable and hold up well wet and dry - no holes or ripsMid:* Solid Construction* New Heel never rubs or slipsSoles:* Take a beating* Handle hot ground better than the 3's and 4'sNEEDS IMPROVEMENTUppers:* As lightweight as these are, they needs to dry a bit faster* Better lace control. When tight, they can press against the top of the foot and feel a bit loose near the toes* Velcro would be a plusMid:* A better cushioning control or cups in the heel - stepping on a small rock can hurt and/or bruise the heel* Maybe a thin gel suspension system to allow the impact to evenly spread throughout the shoesSoles:* An extra millimeter deep sole would give an extra 100 miles and bring the distance to the level of the 4's* A bit harder compound at the base to spread the impact through the midsMY OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:I Love these shoes and do recommend them as they are. My hope is the engineers at Mizuno continue to make improvements to these shoes, especially as it pertains to dispersing energy throughout the soles and mid section.The 4's definitely last longer but the 5's feel better (almost non-existent) and, when the laces are perfectly adjusted, fit like a glove. I've purchased my second pair already and will probably have to get another pair in December.BillH

I run in minimal shoes and had ran in ZemGear 360's for over a year. Recently I got a mild case of metatarsalgia in my right foot and bought these after researching a bit. They are so comfortable and light I forget I'm wearing them. I do wonder how the nice and soft, spongy soles will hold up over time but they are doing my feet right so far! Recommended!

Another website indicated that one ought to order 1/2 size up, so I did. It's a bit big. I'd say it runs true to size, especially if you want a tighter fit, i.e. without socks. It's very comfortable, more like slippers, and from that point of view, there's not really a whole lot of support either. Insole is flat. A fair amount of cushioning is provided by the midsole, and basically the sole is pretty much just midsole material with areas of small rubber nubs for traction and for durability. There is rubber on the outside heel also, but not on the inside. I'm not sure how long these will last.
Remove the barrier between you and a PR-breaking race by slipping into the nearly weightless, explosive performance of the Wave Universe 5 from Mizuno.
