2012 has been the year of the off-road and trail run/obstacle race for me. I have run about 20 this year but it wasn't until recently that I realized that runners in the 'elite' heats of these races were all wearing Inov-8s, and now I see why.I had been running in vibram 5 fingers for the past 5 years or so - people called me the Vibram hipster - but after running in these bad boys I'll save the vibrams for the mud runs and these puppies for the trail and obstacle runs.Wary of anything bright and flashy or worn by cross fitters (ha, just joking) I had my reservations and took these guys out on a 12 mile trail run right off the bat. These shoes fit snugly and ate up the terrain without any problem - I didn't expect to run more than a few miles in them but the comfort kept me going. These shoes are light weight, gripped the mixed trail (gravel, dirt, roots, wooden beams) and the road equally well.I was worried when one of our group runners twisted an ankle and we had to take a road back the last 2 miles. I know some trail shoes or cleats will wreck your feet if you run on pavement - these shoes, and my feet, held up just fine.I plan on getting a heck of a lot of use out of these, so much in fact, that I purchased a second pair just in case I decide to fully replace my vibrams in the dirt and grime.Inov-8 definitely got it right with these.Happy Trails!

Trailroc 245

I compare the 245 to my previous shoe of choice and one it resembles closely. The MT110 from New Balance. I have a normal arch and am a neutral runner.My 245s arrived yesterday and I took them on a 14 mile training run over mostly hard packed, rocky terrain, here are my early impressions. I am impressed with the traction, comfort, and locked in fit. I already prefer them over the MT110s. The trailrocs fit my low volume feet perfectly, just like the Minimus last but a tad bit more room in the toe box. I purchased the same size I wear in Minimus Trail and the fit was spot on.Traction was nice all around - from the hardpack, loose gravel, mud, and soft pine needled track I have no complaints. The upper was 'breezy' and after a small stream crossing they drained and dried pretty well. I do like the mesh upper more than the also nice synthetic 110 upper. I did not have any debris catch or snag the mesh on my run. Also, I did not notice any debris getting through the thin mesh yet or any hotspots. I absolutely love the outsole on this shoe! I just hope it's durable enough to justify the high price tag. I believe it will put the 110 to shame in this category.In regard to weight, I didn't really notice a difference between these and the 110s. The lower 1mm drop of the trailrocs was not noticeable to me either. I did notice a difference with lack of soreness after my usual run which I attribute to the additional cushioning of the trailroc. Or maybe it's just because the EVA foam of the 110 was crushed after the first 30 miles on mine.Complaints - the laces. I guess NB has just spoiled me. Those thick laces just don't come untied. I had to double knot the inov-8 ones. Toe bumper is pretty much not there, it could be beefier. I also wish the tongue was gusseted higher up, it doesn't want to stay put. Removable insole - I'm not a fan, but a great feature for those that wear orthotics...but if you've got orthotics why do you believe in low drop anyway...?Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase. The fit really is spot on, and that was one of my biggest concerns. Now if the durability is there this could be my all around go to trail running shoe. I'm excited to take them out on my long run Saturday.

Best trail shoes I have ever owned

Love the minimal feel, though you will feel a lot. These are too aggressive a tread to really transfer between trail and pavement. On the trails, where they are intended tho, their performance is unmatched. They have a little more sole than I have become accustomed to, but the transition was easy, comfortable and the toe drop is still minimal. If you are used to regular running shoes, and are yet unfamiliar with minimal running shoe, you will DEFINITELY WANT TO EASE into these.

Great shoe!

This is my third pair of Nike Shox. I love them, comfortable to wear all day as well as run a few miles in. If I was planning on doing a half-marathon or longer I would go get a custom fit shoe from a running store but for everyday wear and morning runs these are great! I usually wear these shoes everyday, 7 days a week and they last about two years before I either have to replace them because they are falling apart or they are just too dirty.

Solid suspension, comfortable ride

This is 8th pair of Nikes in 15 years. The last better than your average sneaker. My knees and joints are getting there so I wanted something with superior cushioning. I guess this is as cushioned as the come.Performance 8/10 - As usual I get a half size larger on Nikes because they are a snug fit for me. The contours are great and wrap well. Heel guard isn't too stiff and is flexible. The shox feel really good but need some getting used to as far as balance. Not like you'l keel over, but it's slightly different. Good airflow that keeps it comfortable too.Price and appearance 7/10- Not a big fan of the exposed shox but I guess that's what makes the show. Feels like I'm on stilts but otherwise not an issue. Price is average, and is usually worth the durability.In general, this is a good walking shoe if you need the extra bounce or cushion.

Most comfy shoes I've ever owned.

I bought these shoes after trying them on at a department store in New Jersey.These shoes integrate decades worth of Nike technology making the smoothest ride that I have ever found in a shoe. (I know this sounds like an advertisement from Nike but I assure you that I'm just a really big fan of this shoe). With that aside, I think that all the research sure does pay off. I'm going to give you a short description of each technology.Shox - these four cylindrical columns at the back of the shoe provide great support without the added weight of a heavy sole.Air - each Shox has a small, extremely-durable air bubble encapsulated within the column in order to provide great impact resistance.Lunarlon (Lunar) - Nike claims that this technology was developed with NASA. whether true or not, the Lunarlon is a foam that lines the bottom of the shoes. It makes the shoe super light and provides excellent protection from running surfaces.This combination of these technologies make the shoe such a joy to wear. The only downside to the shoe is that the mesh upper may wear out quickly, but the superior breathability makes this downside worth it.FYI - I use these shoes mainly for cross-training (lifting weights, light jogging, calisthenics, etc.)

great buy

Shoes are awesome. Have received many compliments. Bright colors, soft stable ride and really holds to your foot. Just as a warning to some colors are a little off in the pic. Shoe is light gray with bright light blue and salmon light pink not red scheme.

Excellent quality running shoes from New Balance..

On time delivery, visibly superior (US) workmanship and very comfortable shoes. I'm looking forward to start using them this weekend. They are very light, but well cushioned and flexible (good attributes for underpronators). I highly recommend them.Update - after owning these shoes for one month, I am still impressed. I use them to walk or run on asphalt surfaces. There is no wear. There is good reinforcement on the outer sole - especially in the heel. Despite their light weight, these shoes have excellent cushioning and bounce to them - to the extent that I've actually seen better walk and run times(3-5 mins for a 5 mile distance). It's important to know your whether you under or overpronate. These shoes are for underpronators or neutral runnners. I learned this with a previous pair of running shoes from another manufacturer which was advertised as neutral, but actually seemed like motion control shoes for overpronators. I experienced discomfort and running in them was uncomfortable and actually slowed me down. These 1290's are great running shoes!

Probably the worst shoes I've even owned. Definitely my worst pair of New Balance shoes.

Under the shoe glue of low quality, sole already detaching from shoes. I like the feel of the fabric but by the looks of it I don't believe the shoes will last long.Shoes make funny noises as I walk, makes me really self-aware, have to take shoes off when coming home late.The outline of the shoe is weird. Personally, never met a person whose middle finger is longer than his toe.

Width more like a 2E or maybe a 3E, not like I though a 4E would be

I was expecting a 4E width to provide more that enough room so the sides of the widest part of my feet would not rub against the shoe. This shoe felt more like a 2E or 3E. However, the main reason why I returned the shoe was because what was supposed to be red was more like a peach color.

Cool looking, foot smashing

I should note that I purchased these shoes without first trying them on(damn you internet!). Normally I wear a 9.5, noticing some of the reviews on here mentioned these running a little small I purchased a size 10. Upon arrival, the shoes are very sharp looking, I received several compliments in the short time I did wear them around. Unfortunately ordering a half size large did not do the trick for me, the shoes fit fine length wize and the tightness around my heel felt good, but the front of the shoe narrows too much and the front half of my foot felt like it was being pressed together, needless to say it made for an uncomfortable run. Fortunately the good folks at Amazon have a wonderful return policy and I was able to get my money back, so just a fair warning. Very cool looking shoes, but not proportionately shaped for me.

Great running shoe, but try it on first

The first thing I will say is that for ANY shoe you should try it on before buying. Feet shape/size and running form are different for everyone, so a shoe may work wonderfully for one person and cause considerable pain for another.That being said, I have purchased multiple pairs of this shoe. I purchased the first pair from a local running store where I was able to test them out, and have purchased subsequent pairs from Amazon because they are cheaper and I already know what size I need.Some important things to note: I have a very narrow foot. A few other reviewers have complained about the shoe's toe being too narrow. Again, trying on the shoes will quickly resolve this issue. Also, these trainers are light- to moderate-weight, so they will not hold up as long as a heavier shoe like the Saucony ProGrid or Adidas Supernova, but they are (obviously) lighter to run in and are therefore better suited to running half or full marathons.Case in point: this shoe is great if it fits your foot and running form, but as with any shoe I would at least try it on and, if possible, have your running form evaluated at a running specialty store while wearing the shoes before purchase.

Light weight but good cushion for heel strikers

This is the 2nd pair of Speedstar 5s that I've worn. Before that, I went through three pairs of Speedstar 3s (the yellow ones) and two pairs of Speedstar 4s (the red ones). They've all been about the same, and in fact the Speedstar 5 midsole/outsole is identical to the Speedstar 4s. The upper of the Speedstar 5s is different than the previous models. It's pretty plain, but fits about the same. Maybe a touch narrower than the 4s, but that seemed to go away after a run or two -- maybe they stretch slightly. I typically use them for tempo runs and long runs that include some marathon pace work. They're also great for long races (halfs and marathons), although I've started wearing even lighter shoes now for those distances. I have run at least 6 marathons in Speedstars though and they've been great. I'm a heel striker (always have been/always will be) and they're good for that as they've got plenty of cushion. Essentially they fit/feel like a light version of the Nimbus (which I often wear for long easier runs and general pavement-pounding). My understanding is that Asics is discontinuing the Speedstar, with the 6 being the last in the line (I've got a pair of those too, but haven't run in them yet). Moving towards the 33 line I've heard.
