By C. E. Dye
Roomy toe-box (room for thick wool sox), gusseted tongue and a "waterproof" membrane means these shoes are just the ticket for snowy, icy trails. I'm one of those folks who's feet tend to get cold. So as sort of a masochistic test, I paired these shoes with some short gaiters and slogged my way up the trail on our nearby mountain when it was 3 degrees fahrenheit, blowing hard, and the snow was almost a foot deep. I thought my feet would freeze for sure, but... they didn't even get cold! These then, have become my icy, snowy, trail shoes of choice. For running on sidewalks though, when the patches of ice are infrequent, these are sort of like running in little crampons. The sound on concrete is like little carbide fingernails being pulled across a chalkboard. For in-town winter jogging, these are overkill in my book.

By Stuart Jennings
Icebugs rock! When taking the winter off running doesn't sound like a good idea and you live where there is seasonal snow and ice, consider the alternative--slipping. Everybody slips on the ice when running (unless you're wearing the afore mentioned footwear), and consider the consequences if you fall. I fell running on ice about 10 years ago and partially tore my rotator cuff--a $10,000+ surgery to repair. Fall and hit your head, maybe you're dead. Buy a pair of Icebugs and forget about it. You could run across an ice skating rink. I wore out my first pair of Icebugs and this new pair is greatly improved. Note if you're buying these get the waterproof/breathable option. I inadvertently bought the mesh upper pair (not waterproof and too breathable) for my wife and she gets more cooling than she wants. If you're running on ice these are the deal. Yes, Yak traks are an alternative, but I didn't like them much (less than 50% of the Icebug grip, fall off your running shoes, stretchy plastic breaks if you run on any trails with mixed rock and ice). Salomon has a pair of studded running shoes out (I am a fan of Salomon), but they only have half as many studs in the sole compared to the ice bugs.

Excellent running shoes with spikes! My husband happy! For the winter period - that's it! Making a shoe come in time - my husband still running around on the ice.)
